Moms now can welcome their children into the world in private labor rooms.
And an added bonus -- the first glimpses that babies will get of outside world will include a beautiful scenic view of the Penobscot River.
It's in the same location as the former unit but with more up-to-date technology and other renovations.
"We have new technology that we've brought in, the fetal telemetry, which will allow our laboring moms to be mobile," Clinical Nurse Specialist Carol Giggey said. "They're able to be monitored and completely walk the whole unit so that's a wonderful technology that we have."
The c-section and neonatal intensive care units are also located close by.
The new floor's first patient day was Tuesday.
